Víctor Aravena a horas de Río2016: “Voy a dar lo mejor por mi país”
It is not the first time that the “pit bull of tracks” will represent Chile abroad, but it his first appearance in the Olympic Games and also in a marathon.
The MDS athlete has flattened the streets of Santiago during years participating in the Biggest Sport Celebration in Chile, and now he will do so at the feet of the Redeeming Christ. “I am going to enjoy it from the first kilometer,” he happily said.
It is a big challenge and the Coronel-born athlete knows it. He has been doing intense preparing for eight months for this mega event, but has spent years thinking about it. “This is a dream I had since I was a kid. When I made the mark, the following week I woke up every day with a huge smile. This is a compensation for the sacrifice of years, training under the rain and the cold. It is something not many are able to achieve”.
He trains twice a day and has a weekly regime of 200 kilometers of pure effort. In May he went up to the heights of Cochabamba, Bolivia, with his friend and fellow athlete Daniel Estrada to multiply their red blood cells. He had also planned to go to Cuenca, Ecuador, but the inflammation of a tendon kept him training at home. “Now everything is under control and ready. I will do the best for my country”.
The three times winner of the 21K in the Maratón de Santiago (2010, 2012 and 2013) told that, due to a lack of funds, he was not able to project his participation in his specialty, 5,000 meters, as that requires many competitions in Europe. But he took the right decision and he is now about to live an historic chapter in the life of any athlete.
In August 5, he will be part of the Chilean team in Rio2016, together with Daniel Estrada, Erika Olivera, Natalia Romero and Enzo Yañez. And in Aug. 21 he will run the historic race with no lucky charm whatsoever; he will have just his faith in God, the trust in his capabilities and the pride to represent Chile.
Come on Vitoco!
